Lately

Lately the fall breeze
and darkness comes after noon
leaves turn yellow
and disappear from the room

Isn't it just like the light
playing hide and seek
like two children running wild
their eyes shining bright

Oh and look at our hands
entwined and clean
like the thoughts in my mind
playing together in a band

Whoa and the harmonica plays
to our ears spinning the tires
of old Schwinn bikes
all the way to the lake

Sitting here not at all stranded
tossing rocks in the water
just like the daylight
yeah the daylight demands it

Yes and your red hair in my mind
intertwined
with the sounds of Bobby Dylan
photos of flowers and stop signs

The nights are getting cold
and the best are the clear ones
those memories remain
and never get old

Lately Kate has been busy
with tricks for the old folks
and treats for the kids
the front porch a scarecrow

Straw legs and no hands
photographs of places
mindful of seasons changing
and changing plans

Shutter speeds
apertures open up
feeding the light
through the trees

Deny it
turn the calendar page
walk in the breeze
hold hands with me

Tattooed and lit up
like the forest fires
of my brain
photographs of memories are all that remain
