January. The time for resolutions and drinking and football.
I am not really in to any of those things. So, my first tip for you is, get out there on days when most people are busy. New Year's Day, Super Bowl Sunday...these re great opportunities to be alone in the park, photographing birds.
The hardest part about shooting wildlife, is the access. Private lands and closed public gates limit much access. What do we do? We hunt. Find parks and trails along rivers and around lakes. That is where the wild critters will be.
No tripod does not mean no deep aperture. In the photo above, I used the bridge railing to steady the camera. This was a night shot and an unedited first try photo.
